Masonry is the core trade of construction. It is a skilled vocation that is concerned with the laying of bricks, stones or concrete blocks as part of a construction task. With a boom in the construction industry, the demand for skilled Masons has become the need of the hour. Many of the persons who take up masonry work have neither had formal school education nor attended any vocational training institution. They acquire competencies through informal apprenticeships. These apprenticeships are based on traditional technologies and ideas from previous generations. The quality of training, therefore, is only as good as the skills of the master and the master’s willingness and ability to pass on those skills. It has been found in general that unskilled labourers exhibit productivity less than industry norms, lack of quality consciousness, high material wastage and lack of adequate job knowledge and skills. This establishes the need for a skill based training to overcome these.
